Space USB's presentation at ESA Clean Space Days 2024

We are thrilled to highlight our participation in the ESA Clean Space Days 2024, which took place from October 8th to 11th. The event focused on eco-design, zero debris, and in-orbit servicing — critical topics for the future of sustainable space activities.

A special highlight was the insightful presentation by Côme BERGER, Satellite System Engineer at Thales Alenia Space and a key contributor to the Space USB project. His talk shed light on how Space USB is tackling the challenges of sustainable space, focusing on:
– The growing interest in sustainability among European space stakeholders
– Innovative technologies and concepts, including On-Orbit Servicing (OOS) and In-Space Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM)
– The importance of interoperability and system compatibility in a rapidly evolving technical landscape

Workshop #2

We recently held a productive workshop as part of our ongoing European space project, bringing together the Space USB consortium and our Advisory Board. The focus of this second session was twofold:

– Finalizing the specifications for a universal, serial connector (similar to USB) capable of mechanically connecting two space elements and enabling data and power transfer once assembled in orbit.

– Debating the demonstration of prototypes in a laboratory environment. These prototypes will play a crucial role in advancing On-Orbit Servicing and assembly technologies.

This marks a major step for our project milestones and towards enabling future space missions with modular, easily assembled components. We’re excited about the collaborative effort driving this innovation forward!

Workshop #1

We are pleased to announce that a successful workshop was held the 26th of June at Thales Alenia Space premises in Cannes with our esteemed partners and members of the advisory board, as part of our Space USB Project. The workshop, focusing on the definition of specifications for standard interfaces, brought together key stakeholders to engage in productive discussions and collaborations.

Our objectives for this workshop was as follows:

  1. Discuss preliminary specifications: A detailed presentation was given on the state-of-the-art standard interfaces (SIs), the project objectives and the three European solutions: HOTDOCK, SIROM, and iSSI. This ensured a comprehensive understanding and alignment among all parties. Participants reviewed and analyzed the initial specifications provided.
  2. Identify Hard/Open Points: The workshop served as a platform to identify and address challenging or unresolved points within the prospective standard. This collaborative approach aimed to harmonize different perspectives and reach a consensus.
  3. Formulate Recommendations on Next Steps: Through in-depth discussions, participants formulated actionable recommendations for the next steps. These recommendations will guide the ongoing development and refinement of the standard interfaces, ensuring they meet the highest quality and functionality standards.

The workshop was marked by a cooperation mindset and a shared commitment to advancing our project’s goals. We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions and look forward to the continued collaboration as we move forward.

ROBY Robotic Arm presentation

Table for collecting information about the multifunctional interconnection

We are currently researching multifunctional interconnects* for orbital applications as part of EU funded Project SPACE USB and would like to include industrial expertise in our work.

Information from all existing multifunctional interconnects can help us to find and recommend good standards that can be applied in the EU.  For this reason, we would like to ask you to give us some information about your multifunctional interface in detail. To keep it all in a standard format, we will create a list.

We would be happy if you fill in this list with information and send it back to us by May 31, 2024.

You can download this list on the Zenodo platform.(https://zenodo.org/records/11073215).

Upon request, we plan to share our overview and analysis evaluations as a result with participants.

The results will be published in a scientific paper.

* The meaning of multifunctional interconnect is, that there is an interconnect which is able to mechanically connect space crafts/modules/systems/robotic systems together physically (mechanical and electrical) and data transfer (once the module is equipped with one multifunctional interconnect) and maybe with refueling capability.

Kick-Off meeting January 2024

We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the Space USB project, a groundbreaking project in collaboration with 6 esteemed European companies, funded by the EU! We held the project kick-off meeting on January 10th, 2024 on the Sener premises at Brussels. It was an opportunity for the partners to meet and exchange views on the first steps to be taken in the project. We’d like to thank all our partners for their contributions and the interesting discussions.
